Quotes from Past Teachers
"I helped in maths classes and with a special needs students. I feel I was making a real, genuine difference"
Claire Grantham July 2005 Peru
"Best
bit? How the community welcomed us and how people opened up to us.
Especially the children of whom we learnt a lot and they opened up and
learnt to be more like carefree children with us."
Serge Neumand Ghana July 2004
“Organising and teaching an afternoon class
with P5, P6 & P7 with other members of the team on Aids and HIV was
a highlight. A really rewarding afternoon where it felt like we were making
a very positive contribution to the school.”
Rebecca Wraight, Uganda 2003
'I had quite a bit of work on at Uni' when I joined mad and so didn't
really have time to sit down and think about lots of fundraising ideas.
When the pack came all the ideas were there for me and so was a real help.
Some were quite funny and would have been a real laugh to do but I just
didn't have time to organise them. I chose two ideas that wouldn't take
long, doing a sponsored swim that raised over £400 and a cake sale
at my halls, where my friends helped me to bake cakes and sell them, which
raised £183'
Katie Oyston, Mad Teacher, Kenya 2000
'There are so many brilliant things that you get from being a Mad Teacher.
I was nervous before my first day, but soon got into the swing of things
and loved every minute. It was so good being able to see many of the children
improve their marks, as a result of the revision classes. It also really
helped with feeling part of the village, because as a result of the children
knowing you, many of the parents would offer you some of their farming
produce such as oranges and bananas as a gift. Many of the madventurers
were also invited to dinner so that they could try the parents' home-cooked
dishes'
Ali Terry, Mad Teacher, Ghana, 1999
'It really felt as if I was contributing to the area, and the people seemed
to appreciate the work that we had put in. I arrived at the foresters
office on the first day and there were loads of paper cuttings from the
national newspapers highlighting the need for re-forestation, so right
away I knew that we would be helping. It was so good working in a big
group, with all the other students, we just had such a laugh all day and
I've got so many new friends now'
Ruth Harries, Combined Mad Teacher/ Mad Conservation,
Kenya 2000
'I am a much more confident person with all the challenges that I now
meet at university and work. I have definitely caught the travel bug and
feel the trip was a brilliant way of becoming an independent traveller.
I am now more open minded about developing countries and the people that
live there. It felt fantastic to have so many people to talk, live and
work with, especially as I had not met any of them before. It was an opportunity
to make friends and spend time with people who have varied interests'
Natalie James, Combined Mad Teacher/ Mad Builder/ Mad Conservation, Kenya,
2002
'It has broadened my horizons in a huge way and made me realise a lot
more about myself, along with contributing to the community in a big way'
Emily Kewley, Mad Teacher, Tanzania, 2002
