A land of extreme contrast with arid deserts and immense tropical forests bisected by the jagged spine of the Andes on its journey from Venezuela to the Southern tip of Chile.
Peru has become an extremely popular destination for tourists who flock to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, the highest lake in the world, Lake Titicaca, the Inca ruins of Arequipa and the tropical rainforest and cloud forests of the Amazon.
However, few tourists see the poverty that plagues this proud country. Desperate conditions in rural areas, force Peru’s youth to travel to large cities to seek their fortune.

Since 2005 we have been based in the city of Cuzco, with projects in the city centre and villages in the more rural surrounding area. 3400m above sea level in the Andes mountains, Cuzco was once the centre of the great Inca Empire and is home to some 300,000 people. The city attracts a great deal of tourism – not least as the base for getting to the Inca Trail and the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu - but the narrow cobbled streets and local craft markets still retain all of their traditional charm, and llamas wander past the internet cafes and bars.
Our projects in Cusco concentrate on the most pressing needs of the area, such as the need for rural development around the city and the lack of support to the huge amount of orphaned children in the area.
Why not read Nic Armitage's blog on BBC Tyne? It's full of great stories from her madventure in Peru.
Most projects are based outside of Cusco in rural villages where little has changed in the last hundred years. People in traditional Peruvian dress still farm the fields with ox-drawn ploughs and donkeys are the main rural transport. Despite the income parts of the region receive from tourism, many of these small villages remain very poor, and there is a great deal of scope for projects that are of real value to the local communities. Past Madventurer projects have particularly focussed on providing access to clean water and improving sanitation and community infrastructure in these areas.
Occasionally projects are also based in Cusco city itself, helping the children’s homes and orphanages, which cater for abandoned street kids and those living in extreme poverty, to become self-sustainable.

Flight info for projects based in Cusco:
Flight paths from the UK to Cusco will terminate at Lima where you need to make a connection. This often means remaining overnight in Lima before your connection to Cuzco the next day.
If this is applicable to you, and your flight arrives in Lima the day (or two) before your project begins, we can still meet your flight for a small charge of £50. This will include meeting you at the airport, transport to a hostel in Miraflores, accommodation, breakfast (if your flight isn't too early) and transfer back to the airport the following day. Let us know if you would like us to do this for you.
