Independent Placements - Teaching
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Nelson Mandela
Improving education standards is the key to the development of many economically less developed countries. However, these countries often find it hard to recruit good people into teaching because of the poor wages. The teachers that they do recruit are often extremely dedicated but poorly resourced. Class sizes of over 50 are common and text books can be 30 years out of date.

We are currently running teaching in the following locations:
Your role
You will bring energy and enthusiasm to the classroom, exposing the pupils to a fresh style of teaching and helping to break the classes into smaller, more manageable groups. In some countries, you may find yourself working with children who require special attention. For example in Peru teaching can be arranged in orphanages and children’s homes, as well as schools. This means you may work with children who have been abandoned or have learning difficulties, as well as with those who are trying to escape difficult pasts of drug abuse or prostitution.
You will be encouraged to bring your own skills and interests to the classroom. So if you have a particular interest in mathematics, science, drama, art or anything else, just let us know!
Learning in many of these countries is by rote and children are just not encouraged to be creative. If you have an interest in drama you could organize a school play or if you are a talented artist, encourage the children to develop their creativity through drawing, painting or even working with mud and clay!
Teaching qualifications and experience are welcomed, but not required. For those who are new to teaching, we suggest a weekend TEFL course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), as the more confidence and skills you have, the more rewarding your placement will be. We will also supply you with a teaching pack with lots of ideas to make you feel more confident – within a week you’ll be a pro!
From the classroom:
“English is of vital importance here. The ability to speak just a little English gives access to so many more jobs and so many more opportunities. Our project involves teaching English to the local school children. We have been amazed by the enthusiasm of both the children and adults. Their desire to learn makes teaching a joy. We hope to have brought a positive influence and an exchange of very different cultures.”Susie Chadbourne Peru July 2003
Looking to teach English as part of our projects?
Then why not add a TEFL qualification to your armory before you go. 20 hour weekend courses are available all year around that will give you your TEFL qualification that is approved by the department of Department for Education and Skills.
This will give you the confidence and skills to teach creatively and really get involved with the children. For further information and a TEFL brochure please contact team@madventurer.com
Through this qualification the possibilities are endless.
*Please note that to send out TEFL brochures, we must provide your relevant details to the course provider. The course provider will NOT share your personal information with other organizations.
