If you are looking for a Central American experience, Guatemala epitomizes everything it represents: the most impressive jungle clad Mayan ruins, the most active and highest volcanoes, the fiercest and most devastating earthquakes, and a history of oppression of the indigenous Indian population. In short, it is a country marked by extremes.
We're based on the banks of the Rio Dulce, where Lake Izabal meets the Caribbean coast. Here in this incredibly beautiful and tropical location we work with a grassroots NGO whose aim is to empower the indigenous Mayan Q'eqchi people, improving their living conditions and basic infrastructure.
On the project On arrival on a project in Guatemala you'll be met at the airport by your crew leader and introduced to your fellow Madventurers, before being whisked away along a bumpy road to the village on the coast you'll be calling home for the next 5 weeks! Living at the heart of a rural community and working alongside local volunteers on a building project, with the opportunity to teach in local schools, you'll be amazed by how quickly you feel at home as you settle into village life, and make new friends on the building site and in the classroom!
On the building site you can expect to be carrying, mixing, painting, plastering and laying, working alongside members of the local community and your Madventurer team, to complete the building and see it ready for use before you leave! In the classroom you'll have the opportunity to bring your enthusiasm and energy to lessons, teaching subjects such as English and Maths, as well as holding more creative classes including art, music and sports.
Our projects are flexible, allowing you to teach, build, or combine the two. Weekends on the project are your free time and a chance to explore! You could find yourself hiking through the jungle to glimpse the mysterious Mayan ruins of Tikal, looking down on the canopy filled with howling monkeys and colorful Toucans, scrambling up active volcano Pacaya or relaxing under the watch of the breathtaking limestone cliffs of Lanquin.
