What are its aims, objectives, philosophy?
Madventurer brings together adventurous travel and development projects to offer individuals a unique experience. Madventurer's ethos is 'developing together'. It aims to assist in community development, whilst at the same time enabling travellers to gain experience through work and adventurous travel. Specialising in group and solo projects, our management, HQ staff and overseas crew focus all their resources and passion into making your expedition work.
How long has it been in existence?
Madventurer's first development projects and adventures were in Africa where it's name originated. Although MAD stands for Mottey African Development, it now undertakes operations all over the world, assisting in sustainable development strategies and tourism initiatives.
John Lawler, the founder, was first out undertaking development work and adventurous travel in West Africa in 1998 and has been leading groups ever since. Madventurer was founded to increase the impact of the development work and also to give individuals the opportunity to experience adventurous travelling to the full.
What is the Mad Foundation?
The Mottey African Development (MAD) Foundation was set up to support a wide range of development projects in Africa. The fund is used to pay for project materials, scholarships and grants to help local people set up businesses. Part of your payment to Madventurer is donated to the Mad Foundation. In addition to Madventurer funding, the Foundation also receives donations from the corporate sector, grant-providing bodies and individuals. Many Madventurers also get involved with the Foundation after their expedition and fund raise on its behalf.
Can it give examples of successful programmes?
Madventurer has helped to build 8 new schools and 2 community centres in Africa. It has been able to establish over 100 scholarships for school children and has supported the reforestation programme in Kenya for the last three years. We work closely with local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) on the ground at each project location. Projects that are chosen are both sustainable and have maximum benefit for the local community.
