David Hopkins

Tue, 11 Sep 2007

David Hopkins is a 22-year-old student from Shropshire and in March 2007 he spent 4 weeks on the other side of the world, on Madventurer project, teaching and coaching cricket and rugby in Fiji.

When many people think of Fiji they are reminded of a successful Rugby team, however despite a certain amount of success on the international stage, the country’s national game still receives little financial or coaching support at grassroots level.

Madventurer works closely with local schools, teams, clubs and academies. David split his time between coaching in schools in the morning and, moving on to working with academy and club teams in the evenings.

“Fijians have passion for sport like no one else! No more so than when we went to the national rugby final, the colonial cup final .The place was packed to the rafters inside the national stadium there were thousands there and the atmosphere was electric, it was an awesome experience. The place went mental when a try or kick was scored.”

On Madventurer projects the Mad crew and all of their venturers live together making for a great atmosphere “The house was great, everyone was cool, and I felt as though I had something in common with everyone, it was like big bro without all the bitching.”

As well as a great gap year, venturers get to see how their involvement makes a difference in the local community. On top of this, students who may have not decided on a career path gain valuable life experience and the chance to find out what they want to do. “I wish to pursue a career in sport development, so i saw a wonderful opportunity to gain experience, in a totally different environment, and to travel.”
