A special thanks goes to all at Madventurer for their unwavering support and to the hard working volunteers from Madventurer and MADsocs, without whom many of our vital community development projects could not go ahead.
2011 has seen the re-birth of Newcastle MADsoc! There has been some great fundraising events so far and plans are in full swing for more fundraisers over the next few months.
Due to the lack of facilities in this underdeveloped region of Ghana, and transport problems, many children receive a poor education, if they attend school at all.
Donkorkrom RAMMS School
The school is located in Donkorkrom, the district capital of the Afram Plains, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The area itself is beautiful but considered an underdeveloped region of Ghana, hence why Madventurer has decided to work here, with a school in desperate need of help. Donkorkrom is right next to the Volta region where MAD started and is located between two stretches of water which makes up part of Lake Volta. The city is small with the only electricity in the area lying along this main road that connects the ports of Ekye (for Adowso) and Agordeke (for Kpando). The city is in an impoverished and rural remote area making is difficult for development to occur.
Volunteers will be building a toilet block or classroom block at RAMMS school, which was privately founded in 1997. Due to the lack of funding from the Government and other external organisations, and limited local resources, the school is in a state of disrepair. This is clear from the photographs below. The school buildings were built by the community and the PTA as it was a needed facility for the local children. Although the school has a reputation for doing well in exams, the lack of classrooms, toilets and general infrastructure is causing children to be withdrawn from the school. The toilet block is desperately needed for hygiene reasons and secure classrooms are also needed to restrict animals from defecating inside the classrooms and on the benches the children use as tables.
*Why not ask your RAG (Raise and Give) at your Uni to support the MAD Foundation? The Foundation can offer your students the chance to do group not-for-profit volunteering overseas and RAG can increase their funds raised for charity!
* Run for MAD!? You can raise money for us by doing the Great North Run or any other run throughout the country.
* Volunteer with MAD overseas or in the UK office. For more information email chief@madventurer.com
