Knowledge of the English language is desirable to many Peruvians, particularly in Cuzco, where a thriving tourist market, can provide many job opportunities for English speaking locals. Our teaching projects offer you the chance to spend time with and help teach kids who have a passion to learn and who will benefit from an English speaking teacher.

Qualifications: experience of teaching and/or a formal qualification (e.g. TEFL) a plus, but a willingness to teach children in a fun and creative way is the main requirement.  Basic conversational Spanish preferrable.

Experience available: Planning and delivery of English lessons to a range of ages within primary schools or with teenagers / young mums when combined with care work (see care work section). English will be the main subject of your lessons, although there is also the opportunity to teach other subjects including geography, maths and art. Unless you speak Spanish you will need to employ a certain amount of creativity during your lessons; however you will be surprised of how much you will be able to teach with out actually being able to speak much Spanish yourself using games, pictures and colour. 

Locations: ‘50828 Nueva Alta’ / ‘51002 Nueva Alta’ or within women and children’s homes when combined with care work.  

‘50828 Nueva Alta’This is a state primary school based just 3 blocks from the Madventurer flat. It is attended by children from the impoverished outskirts of Cusco, and children from rural areas who live and work with families in the city to allow them to receive an education that is, comparatively, better than that offered in rural villages. None-the-less, this is a very needy school which severely lacks funding and facilities to provide a decent standard of education.  For this very reason, the school is at present unable to offer English classes to the children. Your role will be to plan and deliver English classes to all age groups, making them as fun and learner-friendly as possible for the pupils. In doing this you will significantly increase the children’s opportunities in future life. 

‘51002 Nueva Alta’This state primary school situated just down the road from the Madventurer flat is attended by children from the immediate surrounding area. Children from two different types of background attend this school, with children from better homes attending in the morning and abandoned or neglected children, some of which are working children, attending in the afternoon. The school has limited funding and as such cannot offer English classes; they depend entirely on volunteers. Ideally, you would be preparing and delivering classes for all grades, with or without the assistance of a teacher, although how much and how you teach is flexible. By delivering these classes you will, once again, be giving these children the same opportunities as children from wealthier areas as even rudimentary English will take them a long way in their later professional life.

Accommodation: Located 3400m above sea level in the Andes Mountains, Cuzco was once the centre of the great Inca Empire and is home to some 300,000 people. The city attracts a great deal of tourism - not least as the base for getting to the Inca Trail and the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu - but the narrow cobbled streets and local craft markets still retain all of their traditional charm, with llamas wandering past the Internet cafes and bars being a common sight! You will be living in our Madventurer House in Cuzco, which is the perfect base from which to explore this vibrant and exciting city. You will share the house with our Madventurer crew leader who will oversee your project, and provide you all the support and guidance you need to get the most from your project.

What's included: All meals, accommodation and transport is provided and our experienced crew arrange airport pick you ups, introduce the project and organise it's structure. They have responsibility to be on-hand for 24 hour support, assistance and to share their insider knowledge of Peru.
