The role of sport across the world
Sport is far more than a luxury or a form of entertainment. Access to and participation in sport is a human right and essential for individuals of all ages to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Sport - from play and physical activity to organized competitive sport - has an important role in all societies. Sport is also crucial to a child's development. It teaches core values such as cooperation and respect, improves health and reduces the likelihood of disease.
Sport can contribute to economic and social development, improving health and personal growth in people of all ages -particularly those of young people. Sport-related activities can generate employment and economic activity at many levels.
Sport can also help build a culture of peace and tolerance by bringing people together on common ground, crossing national and other boundaries to promote understanding and mutual respect.
Many of the core values inherent in sport are compatible with the principles necessary for development across the world, such as fair play, cooperation, sharing and respect. The life skills learned through sport help empower individuals and enhance psychosocial well being, such as increased resilience, self-esteem and connections with others. These are beneficial to people of all ages but especially vital to the healthy development of young people.
The project
Our project mainly focus's on working in a children's football academy based in a small provincial town called Chinchero. The children who attend the academy come from impoverished rural backgrounds and often spend a good deal of their time working, from as young as 5 years old. The academy was established and is run by a local who gives his time to coach the local children and occasionally take them to matches as well. He receives no payment for this, and the academy is the only one in the area not to exclude children by charging them to attend. With our involvement, they have been able to increase the amount of coaching helping to boost the kids self-esteem, enjoyment and of course give them a break from their daily duties of working the land, looking after animals and their siblings.
The academy will benefit from your physical, tactical and training techniques which they are at present lacking, and the coach is keen to learn new skills from volunteers also. Any training books or videos and spare kit that can be brought over are also greatly appreciated.
Basic conversational Spanish is useful but not essential - contact MAD HQ and we'll let you know about our 20 hour Spanish Course in Cuzco that you can take before you start your Project.
