The type of building projects we get involved in varies and depends on volunteer numbers. In the past we have helped to build sanitation blocks, water storage tanks, school classrooms, clinics, community halls and basic housing. The key to any project is the partnership between our team and the local community. As well as bringing essential funding to the project, the presence of a team of Volunteers in the village community can be a great motivator to local people. No previous building experience necessary, we hire local tradesmen or craftsmen to do the specialised parts.
At what level, and to what extent, teachers get involved is up to each individual. During the first week of the project, the Madventurer Crew Leader will introduce Volunteers who want to teach to the Principal of the local school to discuss the Volunteers interests and skill areas, and how these fit in with the school's needs. Most volunteers teach English, literacy, maths or various subjects depending on the schools timetable, resources and staffing.
Basic conversational Spanish is useful but not essential!

Gillian Cowley Peru July 2009 Project and Independent travel - "Well I'm back from deepest darkest Peru, sort of in one piece and my, my, was it challenging! Extremely daunting at first, took all the resources from the bottom of my boots not to turn tail and head straight home, but extremely rewarding. All however paled into insignificance when compared with the majesty of Peru, the breathtakingly beautiful mountain ranges, the magnificent scenery, the wonders of the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, the serenity of Lake Titicaca and floating Island. But more importantly the irresistible smiling children, ragged and grubby, so desperate to learn English, together with the hospitality, friendship and humour of the local people in our village of Urquillos, so worth it!" - Read the rest of Gillie's blog on the link below.
