Home to some of Africa's friendliest people, Ghana is the place where MAD began back in 1998 and we've been here ever since! Formerly known as the Gold Coast, Ghana has stunning beaches and scenery but it's the warmth of the people and the vibrancy of their culture that will take your breath away. We are based in and around Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, around 3 hours from the coast and from Accra.

The Project is designed for healthcare professionals, or students studying or planning to study medicine or a subject related to healthcare. Depending on your experience and interests you may choose to operate in several of the hospital departments or dedicate your time and assistance to one department.
The extent to which you can get involved will depend on your level of experience. You may find yourself accompanying doctors on ward rounds, assisting nurses with the daily care of patients or helping with OPD consultations. Depending on the length of your placement there may also be an opportunity to experience rural healthcare with outreach visits to rural clinics, often the first port of call for those seeking medical attention, before referral to hospital.
Our medical work experience placements in Ghana are based in hospitals and clinics in Ho, the regional capital of the Volta Region. We deliberately chose Ho municipal hospital rather than small rural clinics so that you can gain experience in a broad range of departments during your time with us. However, we also have links with Miracle Life Clinic which is still very busy because of the effectiveness regarding their operations and other health assistance.
Malaria will be by far the most common illness you will see, along with other tropical illness such as Typhoid and Hepatitis. As Ghana does not have the same levels of sanitation as we are fortunate to have you will also become experienced in the treatment of intestinal parasites and dysentery.
Medical care in Ghana is not free. Sadly you will also become accustomed to doctors making diagnoses without tools we take for granted such as x-rays because the patient simply can't afford them. You will also see doctors powerless to treat some patients because they can't afford to buy the medicines.
