Home to some of Africa's friendliest people, Ghana is the place where MAD began back in 1998 and we've been here ever since! Formerly known as the Gold Coast, Ghana has stunning beaches and scenery but it's the warmth of the people and the vibrancy of their culture that will take your breath away. Our placements are based in Ho in the Volta Region, around 3 hours from Accra and the coast.

With over one million orphaned children, a quarter of these due to the AIDS pandemic, and an estimated 20,000 children living on the streets of the capital, our orphanage project offers you the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the lives of some of Ghana's most vulnerable children.
In 2010 we will be working in the "Save the Widows and Orphans Development Centre" (SWODC) this is a small centre which is privately owned. This is a drop-in centre where orphaned children come to be re-homed or fostered. They are placed in homes with extended families, relatives, friends and sometimes dedicated staff from the centre. This is where orphaned children come to spend time with other kids in the same situation. The centre offers them an opportunity to forget about their troubles and spend some quality time in a fun and educational environment. They go to the nearby school in the morning for lessons which you can get involved in also.
During the morning the kids will go to the nearby school for lessons before going to the centre in the afternoon. You can take this opportunity to go with them and get involved in some teaching, or stay in the centre and prepare games and activities for the afternoon.
You will need endless energy and enthusiasm, as you take on the roles of carer, friend, storyteller, English teacher, games organiser and homework helper to name but a few! Whether you are organising a finger painting session for a group of 5 yr olds, or helping one of teenagers with their English grammar, you can be sure that each day will be demanding, but ultimately rewarding.
