With over one million orphaned children, a quarter of these due to the AIDS pandemic, and an estimated 20,000 children living on the streets of the capital, our orphanage project offers you the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the lives of some of Ghanas most vulnerable children, assisting at one of the many childrens homes in the countrys capital.
Project details: One such home is the Peace and Love Orphanage. Founded in 2003, the orphanage cares for over 70 children aged between several months up to 16yrs. Some of the children have lost both their mother and father, others were living on the streets before being rescued, while some children are brought there by parents who can no longer physically or financially care for them. The founder of the orphanage has introduced a small school to the orphanage to educate the children living there and generate income from school fees paid by children attending from the surrounding community
Venturers Role: You will need endless energy and enthusiasm, as you take on the roles of carer, friend, storyteller, English teacher, games organiser and homework helper to name but a few! Whether you re assisting staff get the infants fed, bathed and ready for bed, organising a finger painting session for a group of 5 yr olds, or helping one of teenagers with their English grammar, you can be sure that each day will be demanding, but ultimately rewarding. During term time you will have the opportunity to teach at the adjoining school or can choose to spend your time caring for the children too young to attend.
Location: You will be living and working in the capital city, Accra. Sitting on the edge of the Atlantic, this fast paced, bustling, vibrant city is an ideal base from which to experience the unique culture, renowned hospitality and beautiful landscapes this country has to offer. As the countrys commercial, manufacturing, administrative and communications centre, and a melting pot of Ghanaian cultures, tribes and languages there is something for everyone here. Experience the lively music scene, explore the vast markets or relax on the white sand beaches nearby.
Accommodation: You will live in the Madventurer house, where you can share your days events over dinner with other venturers doing teaching, orphanage, sports and journalism projects. The house is a great place to hang out, with a relaxed and laid back vibe - perfect after a hard days work! The house is also used by venturers starting and ending their community projects in rural areas so there is also the opportunity to meet many other people on different projects. As many venturers use the house we sometimes use our large frame tents with lino flooring and bunk beds which are larger and cooler than the accommodation in the main building, all inside a large compound with its own 24/7 security. Local Ghanaian food is provided at the house during set meal times but you are free to explore Accra’s many restaurants which cater for all tastes. On weekends you can either choose to stay in the city, or get out there and see the country. If you need them, our experienced crew are on hand 24 hours a day to provide support, assistance with any problems that you may have and share their insider knowledge on Ghana.
What's included: Meals, accommodation, transport to and from project, arrangement of placement and support from our experienced crew should you need it.
