Fijian's have a natural passion and ability for sports and the country is sports mad. Yet like many developing countries, Fiji lacks a lot of the necessary infrastructure, funding and expertise to provide adequate sport coaching, equipment and facilities for its people. Our projects aim to work with a number of primary and secondary schools in the west of Fiji providing coaches for PE lessons and after school clubs.

Project Details

You will have the opportunity to coach at a number of primary schools, whose children range from 6-14; you will also be attached to a secondary school (depending on your experience) where you will be coaching a number of squads at different age groups. The players you will work with often lack the ability to perform well structured moves and patterns in the full (15 aside) game, due to there love for sevens rugby. You would have the opportunity to teach these skills and see a great improvement in their performance over only a few weeks.

Volunteers Role

Your role as a Madventurer coach will be to pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm for your particular sport to the kids and adults you teach. There will be 2-3 coaching sessions per day depending on the schools timetable with the possibility to train with a local team in the evenings. We also look for volunteers to share coaching skills and techniques with teachers and sports coaches in the region, enabling them to continue and develop the program.

Location

You would be living in Lautoka, in the Madventurer accommodation. Lautoka is Fiji's second biggest city with an estimated population of 40,000; it's located on the West of Viti Levu near the International Airport of Nadi. Famous for being the centre of Fiji's sugar industry (and nicknamed ˜Sugar City"), Lautoka will give you a fascinating insight into daily island life away from the well beaten tourist track.

Accommodation

Whilst on a project you will be living in the Madventurer house in the suburbs of Lautoka overlooking the bay in the distance. Rooms are a dormitory style with 3 double bunk beds in each, which at capacity means upto 6 people per room. The house is based about a 15 minute walk from the town centre and within walking distance of most of the schools that we work with. Your crew will be living in the house with you, to provide all the support you may need.

Meals at the Mad House, accommodation, transport, arrangement of placement and support from our experienced crew should you need it.

"I can not rate the project highly enough! I have enjoyed all aspects of the coaching, getting the chance to work with children of all ages in both rugby and football. Overall I have a great experience. In terms of coaching the project has allowed me to do something everyday which I enjoy, coaching rugby and football. Working with different group sizes and levels of skills has improved me as a coach. Getting the chance to train and coach the rugby teams in Nakavika and at Tomuka (Red Hill) were fantastic for me and I would like to get the opportunity to come back in the future.
