Fijian's have a natural passion and ability for sports and the country is sports mad. Yet like many developing countries, Fiji lacks a lot of the necessary infrastructure, funding and expertise to provide adequate sport coaching, equipment and facilities for its people. Our projects aim to work with a number of primary and secondary schools in the west of Fiji providing coaches for PE lessons and after school clubs.

Project Details

You can expect to coach at both primary and secondary levels, coaching at an average of two schools daily, with the opportunity to train at nearby facilities on an evening; you may even be able to get a game or two on a Saturday where you can expect a very warm welcome by the rest of the team

Venturers Role

Your role as a Madventurer coach will be to pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm for your particular sport to the kids and adults you teach. There will be 2-3 coaching sessions per day with the possibility to train with a local team in the evenings. We also look for venturers to share coaching skills and techniques with teachers and sports coaches in the region, enabling them to continue and develop the program.

Location

You would be living in Lautoka, in the Madventurer accommodation. Lautoka is Fiji's second biggest city with an estimated population of 40,000; it's located on the West of Viti Levu near the International Airport of Nadi. Famous for being the centre of Fiji's sugar industry (and nicknamed ˜Sugar City"), Lautoka will give you a fascinating insight into daily island life away from the well beaten tourist track.

Accommodation

Whilst on a project you will be living in the Madventurer house in the suburbs of Lautoka overlooking the bay in the distance. Rooms are a dormitory style with 3 double bunk beds in each, which at capacity means upto 6 people per room. The house is based about a 15 minute walk from the town centre and within walking distance of most of the schools that we work with. Your crew will be living in the house with you, to provide all the support you may need.

What's included

Meals at the Mad House, accommodation, transport, arrangement of placement and support from our experienced crew should you need it.

Minimum of 4 people Maximum of 16 - Please note that all our Urban Placements in Fiji are guaranteed to run in 2010 irrespective of numbers.

Age restriction applies for all our Fiji Placements please contact us for further details. Please be aware that Fiji is our most popular destination and does tend to get booked up very quickly throughout the year.

"I honestly did not expect in my 6 weeks to have had such a good time, there is not one particular experience but a whole bunch that made my time here so fun. I really do believe that you get out of it exactly what you put in. Living in the house is ace, you feel llike one big family and get to know each other. Will really miss the crew especially Mere the cook and her food! Looking back over my 6 weeks here I would not have changed any of it, I'm sad to be leaving. I do believe I've gained from coaching netball here its made me confident in my own coaching ability".
